Ahead of the event, Modi has been fasting and praying in an 11-day ritual steeped in Hindu religious symbolism. But many Hindus believe the Babri Masjid was built on the ruins of a Hindu temple, allegedly destroyed by Babar, the first Mughal emperor of South Asia. The site is significant to them because they believe it’s the birthplace of Lord Ram, now honored with the construction of the new Ram Mandir. Hindu nationalist groups had for years campaigned to demolish the mosque to build a temple in its place. As 2023 comes to a close, we take a look at the year that was in Asia and the Pacific region. But who had it good and who had it bad in 2023? Bad year: China's property marketWith millions of Chinese citizens still waiting for homes they put down payments on — but might never be built — 2023 was a particularly bad year for China's property market. A newly built property is seen from the air in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province, China, Dec 15, 2023. Chinese families and individuals who once saw homes as more than somewhere to live but also as investments have reason to fear 2023 won't be the last bad year they face.

REUTERS/Amit Dave/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 23 (Reuters) - India is drawing up rules for governing deepfakes, a top minister said on Thursday, a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised concerns over the technology. "We plan to complete drafting the regulations within the next few weeks," information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters after a meeting with academics, industry groups and social media companies. Deepfakes are realistic yet fabricated videos created by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms trained on online footage. The move comes as countries across the world race to draw up rules to regulate AI.

The comments come after India's finance minister announced a plan this year to provide equity of 300 billion rupees ($3.6 billion) to help the big state oil refiners move towards cleaner energy. Based on rights issues previously announced by two other state refiners, an ONGC issue could amount to about 155 billion Indian rupees ($1.86 billion), Reuters calculations show. ONGC, HPCL and the oil and finance ministries did not immediately respond to requests for comment. India's other big state refiners, Indian Oil Corp (IOC.NS) and Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL.NS) have announced plans to launch rights issues of 220 billion and 180 billion rupees, respectively.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted a study following what it called "anecdotal reports about sudden unexplained deaths among apparently healthy adults" aged 18 to 45 between October 2021 and March 2023. "We found no evidence of a positive association of COVID-19 vaccination with unexplained sudden death among young adults," the research group said in a study published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research. "At the same time, family history of sudden death, hospitalisation for COVID-19 and lifestyle behaviours such as recent binge drinking and vigorous-intensity physical activity were risk factors for unexplained sudden death." ICMR researchers identified 29,171 sudden deaths and scrutinised the records of 729 of the cases as well as 2,916 "control" subjects as part of their investigation, the group said. Many Indian hospitals ran out of beds during the peak of the COVID crisis and many people died at home.

REUTERS/Amit Dave/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMUMBAI, Nov 4 (Reuters) - India is planning to extend its free food grains programme by five years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday, as the government tries to shield consumers from rising prices of cereals ahead of a general election early next year. The grains programme, estimated to cost the government around 2 trillion rupees ($24.06 billion) this year, was due to expire at the end of the year. India, the world's second-largest producer of wheat and rice, has restricted exports of both cereals to curb rising prices at home. Global rice prices jumped to a 15-year high after India, the world's biggest rice exporter that accounts for more than 40% of global rice exports, curbed exports of non-basmati rice varieties in July. India last year banned wheat exports in a surprise move after a heat wave curtailed output.

"It's a good strong number and shows the economy is doing well," Yellen said at a Bloomberg live interview event. She dismissed suggestions that higher bond yields may be due to worries about rising U.S. deficits or worries about a recession. Yellen said that the U.S. debt servicing burden would be a "bigger challenge if the interest rate path stays higher." She has maintained that the real interest rate costs for the federal government have remained close to 1% of GDP, a manageable level. "The higher the interest rate path, the more that we need to do" on deficit reduction, she said.

Rises in food prices, which make up about half the consumer price index (CPI), continue to cool from recent peaks after the Indian government enacted a series of measures to boost supply. "Having said that, the persistent part of the food inflation problem remains there, which is cereals, pulses and spices, and I think the RBI can't do much about it anyway." Rising crude oil prices are also likely to keep inflation elevated in the world's third-largest oil importer. Oil prices rose around 3% on Monday to trade around $90 a barrel. REUTERS/Amit Dave/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsBENGALURU, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Retail Ventures said on Friday it would raise 49.67 billion rupees ($598 million) from the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, in the latest bet on India's largest retailer ahead of a potential stock market listing. "Reliance Retail has demonstrated strong growth and adaptability in a market that is evolving at an unprecedented pace," said Hamad Shahwan Aldhaheri, executive director of the private equities department at ADIA. The investment comes as Reliance set an internal target to raise $3.5 billion. REUTERS/Amit Dave/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Tuesday the United States has become overly dependent on China for critical supply chains, particularly in clean energy products and needs to broaden out sources of supply. Yellen, speaking at a Fortune CEO event in Washington, repeated her longstanding view that the United States does not want to decouple economically from China. "We're fooling ourselves if we think that abandoning, for all practical purposes, semiconductor manufacturing, is a smart strategy for the United States," Yellen said.
